Isaac Smith (b.1944), of Dallas, was born and raised in Louisiana. The son of a farmer, he spent a lot of time playing in the swamps, which led to his familiarity and fascination with animals. He began carving in the mid-1970s. He "finds" animals in scavenged pieces of wood, then, using a hatchet, carves and finally paints them. His work has been included in a number of museum shows, including a one-man show at the African American Art Museum in Dallas.
