Young, Purvis

Purvis Young lived all his life in Miami. While serving time in prison as a young man, he took up painting. His paintings have an almost abstract look, but they are anything but that. Young worked with materials he found on the streets, and his highly symbolic and visionary works on these found surfaces--wood, paper, cardboard--reflect and interpret the tumoil of daily life there. Purvis passed away in 2010.
