Oil on canvas. 1995. Framed. 35" X 29 1/2"; with the frame the dimensions are 41 5/8" X 35 1/2"

This is a portrait of the footballer Eric Cantona, based on ' The Ecstasy of Saint Paul,' a painting by Nicholas Poussin.  Cantona, who was the star player for Leeds United in 1992 and, due to his enigmatic poetry, had been dubbed "Renaissance Man,' is portrayed as a modern day icon and is being glorified as an object of worship.  The uniforms of the various football teams he played for are layed out in a row across the bottom.

The painting is featured in the book 'Mekons United' and was also featured in the Polk Museum show of the same name.
