In Dreams

Wool, hornets nest, walnut, poplar, mdf, glass, plastic, paper, fiber, archival ink, clay, metal, found object, rubber, vinyl, beeswax, electrical wiring, LEDs. 18"x18"x7"  2024

Sometimes when I finish building work, there is music playing in my head. While working on In Dreams, I was processing the concept of abundance in all forms, using dream symbolism as a way of storytelling. The lower left room is about the juice of life being just out of reach, while the upper left scene is about an empty space where the past once was and where the future is unknown. The apple in the upper left is a nod to Magritte’s The Son of Man, which to me, depicts a man with cloudy skies all around, but the fruit of life is right in front of him. The song playing for me when I finished this piece was Roy Orbinson’s In Dreams, which is about having it all while one dreams, but waking life reflects an opposing existence.

This sculpture’s exterior is built with hornet’s nest, luthier wood, and industrial wool. Hornets are known for their buzzing sound. I bent the thin luthier wood on a heating rod created for violin building. Industrial wool is a common soundproofing material used in recording studios.
