“It Happened In The Hay”
Based on a spot in a nearby valley, I liked the long view of the mountains fading into the cold haze and the cattle scattered on the snow. I took a couple photographs of this scene, which I used to piece together this painting. I remember the sounds of the cows’ hooves crunching and breaking through the crusty snow, but the cows appearing to be totally comfortable. At one point, the interaction between the two main characters was especially graphic and lude, but I painted it out and I’m glad I did. I think the suggestion in this case is far more powerful and funny, but if you get up close and inspect the painting you can probably see a trace of what had come before.
